Advocating for Policies that Enable the Formerly Incarcerated to Live Responsibly

This project identifies and works to reduce barriers to re-entry for formerly incarcerated individuals. Our goal is to connect people who have been incarcerated with available educational training opportunities, housing, job opportunities, voting information, and other information necessary to successfully re-enter Texas communities. TCJC also seeks to increase support and resources for employers, landlords, and service providers taking part in localized re-entry initiatives throughout Texas, and we monitor the implementation of policies that address these important community issues.

Re-Entry Presentation

On October 19, 2011, Ana Yáñez-Correa provided a presentation to the Austin Re-entry Roundtable on how far Texas has come in re-entry reform, and how far we still must go to provide Texans a second chance to live up to their potential and to become contributing members of society. To download a PDF copy of the presentation, click here Re-Entry Reform in Texas: 2005-2011.

Click here to link to the Tools for Practitioners page. There you will find reports, guides, and useful tools for re-entry practitioners.

New Reentry Feature & Call to Action !

Successful reentry programs and services are critical to increasing public safety and saving taxpayer dollars. Without assistance for people leaving incarceration, rates of re-offending are likely to rise, along with increases in associated enforcement and re-incarceration costs. For this reason, TCJC is featuring innovative programs that help returning individuals.

This month, we are featuring Dallas' model reentry program, Project Reconnect, which provides reentry case management and community referrals to nonviolent parolees, specifically in areas of employment, housing, education, recovery support, and community service.

Among other things, TCJC's feature examines these important areas:

·       Project Reconnect program components, eligibility, and partners. The benefits of expanding housing options in other Texas cities.

·       Steps for implementing successful reentry programs.

Have you ever wanted to take a larger role in Texas' reentry efforts? Join a Reentry Task Force Working Group! Among other things, Working Group members help to identify currently available reentry programs and initiatives, assess the level of collaboration and coordination among such entities, examine barriers impacting individuals' reintegration to the community, and provide relevant recommendations to the Task Force.
